Jeffrey M. Simmons, MD, MSc has practiced as a pediatric hospitalist since 2004 after pediatric and chief residency at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. His post-graduate training includes a general pediatrics research fellowship, a master’s degree in epidemiology, and advanced training in quality improvement methods and patient safety. During his 21-year tenure at Cincinnati Children’s, Jeff was a leader for many key transformations including family-centered rounds, rapid adoption of evidence-based practice, population health for children with asthma, and situation awareness for patient safety. As Safety Officer and Assistant Vice President, he improved the sustainability and spread of key safety innovations, included patients and families in all safety teams, redesigned the regulatory readiness and response system, infused human factors engineering into safety, and most recently began to address racial and ethnic disparities in safety outcomes. Jeff has mentored dozens of faculty, trainees, and allied health practitioners in academic research and quality improvement efforts, and has published over 75 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters. Jeff has been married to his wife Kerry since 1995, and they have three college-aged (and beyond) daughters.
