Dr. Wheeler grew up in Chattanooga, Tennessee and attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee. He received his medical degree from the University of Tennessee in Memphis and did his pediatric residency at LeBonheur Children's Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He completed his fellowship training in Pediatric Pulmonology and Critical Care at the Harvard Medical School and Children's Hospital Medical Center in Boston.

Before co-founding Children's Respiratory and Critical Care Specialists in 1988, Dr. Wheeler was the Medical Director of Respiratory Therapy, Pulmonary Medicine and Cystic Fibrosis at the Fort Worth Children's Medical Center and subsequently Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and the Medical Director of the Pediatric Pulmonary Function Laboratory at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Dr. Wheeler is board-certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in general pediatrics, pediatric pulmonology and pediatric critical care. He has special interests in apnea, SIDS, infant pulmonary functions, homecare for ventilator dependent children and cystic fibrosis.

Dr. Wheeler and his wife have five children and reside in Minnetonka. Outside interests include reading, gardening, and following college baseball and softball.
